A portrait, or a study of the human figure, on occassion occupy a place in the surreal, atmospheric settings I like. If the focus is on the person and the setting isn’t visible, the person’s features and expression move me to other worlds where my eye wanders across a landscape of flesh, navigating obstacles and dangers with each glance.
I'm grateful to Tish Miller for her extraordinary Studio Sweep annual art bazaar which brings artists together with collectors and homemakers. Some of these drawings were made for the 2017 year-end event. Other drawings were made at family and friend gatherings. I look forward to drawing opportunity events such as these. I love when a drawing develops in the way I want. Life drawings do this. I compare the process to surveying maps of landscapes, to following terrain and roadways to see the overall connectedness of things. The drawings don't just capture a moment in time, they span the time in which I lived with this person to explore the mutual landscape we shared. It was nice to share this with all of you, my sitters, my models. (Graphite on Paper)

These are commissioned pieces created from photos. For one reason or another, the subject of the commission may not be available to sit for the work. Photos are the next best thing to drawing from life. I prefer life drawing, even if it's of a one or two year old who doesn't sit still. There is something more robust and alive that comes from the interaction of a live sitting.
