Lacey invited me over for dinner at his studio home in Hilly, Louisiana, just north of Ruston. Although it was dark, I could tell that it was a beautiful area as I drove on a narrow highway that meandered over wooded hills. The home itself is nestled in a thicket of pines, and I would have missed it if it weren’t for his explicit instructions on how to get there. The landmark was a mailbox painted like an abstract spacescape. Across from the mailbox was a nearly invisible drive, but I could see a light through the trees. It is an old home, 1920’s or ’30’s style, with asbestos siding and multiple gables to the roof. It would make a beautiful painted lady with its many angles. I walked up the old wooden steps to be greeted by his charming smile and warmth. I could tell he was a little nervous. So was I. He invites me in.
The first room, a former living room, is his working studio. There are canvases, paintings, paper, books, tools and materials everywhere. The next room, a former dining room, is his working studio. There are drawings, books, pencils and paper everywhere, plus a large 3′ x 4′ paper storage cabinet and the biggest drafting table I have ever seen. The next room, the kitchen, is his working studio. There are paint jars soaking in the sink, paint brushes drying with some dishes and books everywhere.
Dinner is served. Shrimp Alfredo on linguine with a side of broccoli all cooked to perfection. The three of us (he has a cat, but that is another story) sat on the studio floor for a picnic style supper. We talked and talked into the wee hours–neither of us are nervous anymore.
This house originally belonged to his grandparents. When his family returned to Ruston after his father’s time in the Navy, they moved into it. It used to be located on one of the main streets in Ruston, but was moved to Lacey’s property when a large drug store chain bought the real estate that it and surrounding homes sat on. It is endearing to see a home last through three generations. I would like to see it be used as it’s original intention, a family home. It took some time–and is still a work in progress–but the studio is now separate from the living spaces. We can comfortably have company over without everyone sitting on the floor.
Next is about that cat.
